Students being active in the fieldhouse

Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893. That strong heritage of innovation and quality has guided our education programs for more than a century. Today, UW-Superior is still regarded as a frontrunner in PK-12 education programs. Our graduates are leaders in their field, making a lasting difference in students’ lives. The need for dedicated and highly skilled educators has never been greater and with a degree from UW-Superior, opportunities abound.

UW-Superior’s physical education K-12 licensure program combines the subject matter expertise of our Health and Human Performance Department with the excellence of our teacher education program to prepare you for a rewarding career as a physical education teacher for K-12 students in a wide variety of settings. This program seeks to serve all students in a caring educational environment, fostering intellectual growth and developing critical thinking skills, positive attitudes and personal responsibility toward leading productive and healthy lifestyles.

Part of what makes this program unique is the wide variety of additional career opportunities it creates. Many Physical Education students enhance their employment options by completing minors or certificates in CoachingHealth Education or Adaptive Physical Education.

Certification for licensure requires completion of the teacher certification coursework and student teaching. You will have opportunities in grades K-12 classrooms throughout your coursework.

What You’ll Learn

The physical education – grades K-12 program aims to inspire teachers to lead productive and healthy lifestyles and to share that education with youth. Our faculty understands the importance of combining human physiology and wellness with interpersonal communication. This program is a great opportunity to transform your passion for health and wellness into a career path.

The HHP department at UW-Superior has built the physical education major around the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, career, social and environmental.

Through this program, you will learn that:

  • Developing a knowledge base and critical thinking skills concerning responsibility for individual wellness is critical for all human beings.
  • All students should be given an opportunity to develop a positive attitude toward healthy behaviors for a lifetime.
  • Learning takes place best when there is an emotional attachment; therefore, you must be engaged in the curriculum
  • Attitudes are caught, not taught. As a teacher, you must be excited about your courses and teaching environment.
  • As we learn to move, we move to learn. We all have the responsibility to become aware of and learn to respect diversity among people.
  • The teaching-learning process is a two-way street. Student-teacher relationships should revolve around good, honest communication, valued learning experiences and assessments. It should bring about expected outcomes for both parties.

Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities

There is a well-documented nationwide shortage of teachers, and UWS physical education teachers are in high demand. The vast majority of our graduates find teaching jobs upon graduation, and many have multiple opportunities to choose from.
