Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893. That strong heritage of innovation and quality has guided our education programs for more than a century. Today, UW-Superior is still regarded as a frontrunner in PK-12 education programs. Our graduates are leaders in their field, making a lasting difference in students’ lives. The need for dedicated and highly skilled educators has never been greater and with a degree from UW-Superior, opportunities abound.

As a mathematics education major, you will prepare to teach math classes such as geometry, algebra 1 and 2 and calculus, among others. The coursework includes teacher education courses approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to fulfill state licensure requirements when completed with an instruction minor. This major prepares you to be a highly skilled educator who shares your passion for math with the students in your future classrooms. Beyond the 4-12 classroom, a major in mathematics education can also lead to rewarding careers in higher education, business, research, government and the private sector.

Student Teaching

In addition to opportunities in grades 4-12 classrooms throughout your coursework, you will complete a full semester of student teaching at the end of your degree and licensure program. Our Field Experience Coordinator will help you find placements that fit your individual needs and goals.

Licensure

Our programs are designed to align with Wisconsin state licensure requirements. However, many students apply for licenses in other states, such as Minnesota and Michigan. We encourage you to check with your state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.

World with graduation cap on top

No Enrollment Cap

Unlike many universities, our education programs do not have an enrollment cap, meaning there is no enrollment limit for students who meet admissions guidelines.

What You’ll Learn

In this program, you will learn teaching practices and explore advanced mathematics courses. Both major and minor students will take math education and required mathematics courses, including topics in geometry, abstract mathematics, linear algebra and several calculus and analytic geometry classes. In addition to these requirements and student teaching, you will have some choices in which courses you take in the following three categories:

  • Conceptual special topics
  • Calculus-based probability/statistics
  • Advanced level mathematics

Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities

There is a well-documented nationwide shortage of teachers, and licensed teachers are in high demand. The vast majority of our graduates find teaching jobs upon graduation, and many have multiple opportunities to choose from.

Licensure for Degree Holders

If you currently hold a degree and are interested in teaching, UW-Superior offers licensure programs that apply your coursework.
