Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893. That strong heritage of innovation and quality has guided our education programs for more than a century. Today, UW-Superior is still regarded as a frontrunner in PK-12 education programs. Our graduates are leaders in their field, making a lasting difference in students’ lives. The need for dedicated and highly skilled educators has never been greater and with a degree from UW-Superior, opportunities abound.

As an English secondary education major, you will be prepared to teach English and other literature, speech and composition-based courses to students. Coursework contains a concentration in English literature. The program leads to grades 4-12 English licensure in the State of Wisconsin and requires completion of the instruction minor and either the writing major, writing minor or the theatre minor as well as a full semester of student teaching.

This program is available on campus and online. UW-Superior also offers a broad field language arts education licensure program.

Licensure

Our programs are designed to align with Wisconsin state licensure requirements. However, many students apply for licenses in other states, such as Minnesota and Michigan. We encourage you to check with your state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.

No Enrollment Cap

Unlike many universities, our education programs do not have an enrollment cap, meaning there is no enrollment limit for students who meet admissions guidelines.

What You’ll Learn

Upon completion of this program, you will be licensed in Wisconsin to teach students from 4th grade through high school. You will follow a course of study approved by the Wisconsin Departement of Public Instruction, including many courses focused on literature genres and composition, as well as communications and theater arts. Additional coursework is completed through the teacher education program.

Throughout the program, you will learn to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of major texts and traditions of language and literatures in English, including cultural and historical contexts in English literature.
  • Analyze and interpret literary texts in a thoughtful manner.
  • Demonstrate the ability to express and present critical interpretations of literature in clear and effective manners.
  • Learn to read literary texts closely, with focused attention to language, content and form.

My experience in the English Education program at UWS has been filled with genuine learning experiences, applicable content, and significant support from program staff. I have been able to build both my ELA content area knowledge and skills as well as my ability to transfer that material onto others. I am grateful for the knowledge, experience, and support I have received from this program.
