Overview
Coaches have a significant impact on youth development physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively, and the need for skilled and dedicated coaches is growing. UW-Superior’s coaching minor aligns with the latest Wisconsin Department of Instruction standards and is an ideal program option if you are an elementary or secondary education student who wishes to obtain an athletic coaching licensure. It is also a great option if you are a non-teaching major who is interested in coaching in a school or other community setting.
Two Program Options:
- A minor that meets Wisconsin Coaching Athletics certification requirements* leading to licensure for athletic coaching for kindergarten through grade 12. This option must be paired with a major or minor program leading to teaching licensure. Students must also complete the instruction minor. (Please note that students in the physical education major do not need the coaching minor as licensure requirements are automatically fulfilled by that major’s curriculum.)
*Many students apply for certification in other states, such as Michigan and Minnesota. We encourage you to check with your state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.
- A non-licensure minor that may be taken alone or paired with any non-teacher education major for those interested in athletic coaching in a school or community setting. This path includes much of the same curriculum but does not lead to certification.
What You’ll Learn
In this minor, you will take courses in the health, health and human performance, and coaching academic areas. You will learn about physiology, anatomy, and kinesiology to understand the constraints, challenges, and potential of the human body. Courses include laboratory components, lectures, and project-based learning opportunities led by experienced faculty. Coaching-specific classes include:

The coaching program at UW-Superior has provided me with a place to sharpen my abilities in the coaching field, through the relationships that I built and the people that I met, this program has given me a chance to become a better person and coach.
