Overview

An undergraduate degree in biology can open doors to some of the most rewarding and meaningful careers. The University of Wisconsin-Superior biology program offers a small, supportive environment with access to investigative opportunities in the classroom, field and lab that are often only found only at much larger research institutions. As a biology major at UW-Superior, you will have hands-on research opportunities beginning your first year. You’ll also develop meaningful connections with individuals on campus and in the region that will lead to success after graduation.

Biology majors are eligible to apply for a Swenson Scholarship covering full tuition and book costs for up to four years.

Choose Your Focus

Faculty will work closely with you to plan your academic program, pursue field work and conduct research.


What You’ll Learn

Choose from a number of focus areas by taking elective courses in your area of interest, including: pre-medicine and health professions, cell/molecular biology, ecology/aquatic biology/fishery science, and plant sciences. Through a major or minor in biology at UW-Superior, you will:

  • Gain a comprehensive background in biology that will prepare you to enter medical school or health care professional programs
  • Understand and be able to conduct research using genetic, cellular and molecular approaches
  • Thoroughly understand concepts such as genetics, microbiology and animal behavior
  • Experience field work and sampling

Ecology

Uniquely situated on the shore of Lake Superior, our ecology track offers unparalleled freshwater research and experiential learning opportunities. You’ll have the opportunity to intern at UW-Superior’s Lake Superior Research Institute or National Estuarine Research Reserve, as well as many nearby organizations. In 2024, a floating classroom will be added – a state-of-the-art vessel on Lake Superior that will provide hands-on learning and research opportunities on the world’s largest freshwater lake.

Pre-Health

The avenues available to pre-health biology majors are vast and diverse. Graduates prepare for careers in medicine, pharmacy, chiropractic care, veterinarian health, and much more. Many of our students say that the personalized support of our experienced and connected faculty was the key that enabled them to achieve their goals.

Cell/Molecular Biology

Some of the greatest advancements in medicine, food production and immunology are happening at the molecular level. A concentration in cell and molecular biology will prepare you for graduate and professional programs in areas such as genetics, microbiology, immunology and medicine. Graduates also use their undergraduate training to go directly into careers in laboratory research, education, and much more.


International Students

STEM Designated Degree Program

For international students, this major is a STEM Designated Degree Program which can qualify you to extend your post-graduation stay in the United States.
