UW-Superior provides an on-campus or online Associate of Science in Liberal Studies, which delivers a comprehensive liberal arts education with a focus on natural and social sciences. This program may be a good fit if you are interested in the sciences or if you are planning a career that requires a science background. It establishes a strong academic foundation and fulfills the University Studies requirements for most bachelor’s degree programs

An A.S. in Liberal Studies degree is a great option if you are pursuing a science-related career but may not be ready for a four-year degree or if you wish to begin your educational journey with the option to build on it in the future.

What You’ll Learn

The Associate of Science in Liberal Studies degree aims to develop well-rounded students by providing diverse experiences beyond those offered by a high school diploma. This degree prepares you to enter the workforce with the skills to succeed and advance in your career, while also laying the groundwork for further education in a bachelor’s degree program.

The curriculum is built around a core foundation of writing, communication, mathematics, and health and wellness. You will then choose additional courses in natural sciences, social sciences, and math/computer science based on your interests and career goals. These course topics range from biology and chemistry to computer science and geographic information systems courses, and even criminal justice and psychology. The program also includes coursework in global awareness and diversity to ensure you are prepared for the global workforce you will be entering.

Degree Requirements and Details

A minimum of 60 credit hours is required, with at least 24 credits earned at UW-Superior.

Core courses will cover the following areas: humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, fine and applied arts and diversity/global awareness. Beyond the core requirements, you will select an additional 18 credits from the natural sciences, social sciences and/or mathematics and computer science fields.

Latin honors are not awarded for associate’s degrees.

Outcomes

National data continues to support the finding that continued education leads to higher earning potential. 2022 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that employees with an associate’s degree make an average of $150/week more than those with only a high school diploma. Students often find that having a college degree demonstrates their initiative and determination, opening doors to more employment and advancement opportunities.
