The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host a Veterans Day ceremony and presentation of Henry Blomberg Excellence in Service Awards on Monday, November 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Shippar Family Atrium of the Yellowjacket Union.
The ceremony, which is open to the community, will begin with the presentation of colors and national anthem. Jake Theivagt, UW-Superior graduate, will provide remarks.
The Henry Blomberg Excellence in Service Awards presented are named for Lieutenant Henry Blomberg, who was born in Superior August 3, 1892. He attended Superior Normal School (now UW-Superior) where he became a top debater and played baseball and football. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard after graduation in 1916. Blomberg registered for the draft and soon found himself on a boat to France with the 32nd Division amid World War I. Blomberg’s acts were recognized with a promotion to captain, but he was too busy to accept. During the Battle of the Argonne in October 1918, Blomberg was seriously wounded. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest military honor.
The Yellowjacket Union is located at 1605 Catlin Ave. in Superior.
