University of Wisconsin-Superior undergraduate student researchers were a part of more than 150 fellow students from the Universities of Wisconsin to showcase their work at the UW’s annual Research in the Rotunda event at the State Capitol on Wednesday, March 6, in Madison.

Research topics by UW-Superior students included “Evaluation of Gal4-Induced Cell Death in the Ovary of the Fruit Fly,” by Niyoosha Abdollahpour; “Exploratory Analysis on Fashion Industry and Its Environmental Effect,” by Tamami Igeta; “Ojibwe Spiritual Practices from the 1930s-1978,” by Dillion Krisik; “Slip Glazes with Wild Clay,” by Evaline Britton; “Spatial Gesture Recognition With Machine Learning,” by Hayk Arzumanyan; and “The ‘Troubles’ in Music,” by Sami Keller.

UW-Superior faculty advisors for the students were Kristopher McConnell, Kyle Roskoski, Joel Sipress, Mike Maguire, Sergei Bezrukov and David Potter.

Lawmakers, employers, alumni, and the public were invited to attend this free event. The event featured remarks by Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman and Board of Regents President Karen Walsh.

“Undergraduate student research helps students better understand their material, informs faculty teaching, and creates better job opportunities for graduates,” said Rothman. “Our universities are national leaders in helping undergraduates get research experience, and this event is a great way to showcase our students’ successes.”

Research in the Rotunda is sponsored by Kwik Trip, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, BioForward, the Wisconsin Technology Council, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, and the UW-Milwaukee Research Foundation. The event is supported by the Wisconsin Department of Administration and the UW-Madison Memorial Union.
