About
Richard was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the Director of the Transportation and Logistics Research Center. He was also co-director of the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute. He served as chair of the School of Business and Economics from 2011-2015. Prior to accepting his appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1999, he was a professor at the United States Merchant Marine Academy for 13 years and head of their Department of Marine Transportation.
Richard has extensive teaching experience in undergraduate and graduate courses in the U.S. and overseas. He has extensive publications and presentations. He serves and leads in professional societies, advisory boards, nonprofit boards of directors and companies. Richard sailed merchant ships serving through the ranks to command multiple ocean-going vessels. His industry experience ashore includes fleet Manager, small business owner, cargo surveyor, real estate agent and port captain. He is certified in Transportation and Logistics (CTL). He served 30 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, earning the rank of Captain. He has U.S. Coast Guard certifications
Richard was issued a Merchant Marine License: Master of Steam or Motor Vessels of any Gross Tons upon Oceans by the U.S. Coast Guard. He also met the standards for the training and certification of watchstanders, 1995 (STCW 95) Certified: First Aid, Advanced Marine Firefighting, CPR and Radar Endorsement.
His research grants for government and industry have investigated marine, intermodal, rail, planning and logistics issues. He has been the principal investigator for over $10 million in major multi-university research projects. His projects have been funded by the National Science Foundation, US Coast Guard Research and Development Center, USDOT, US Department of Labor, EPA, US Army Corps of Engineers, state agencies, planning agencies and private industry. UW-Superior has awarded Dr. Stewart with the Distinguished Service Award. UW System designated him a Wisconsin Idea Fellow.
He has extensive publications and presentations on transportation management, marine environmental management, port operations and transportation education. He was the co-author of a textbook on International Logistics and has contributed chapters to others. UW-Superior has awarded him the Max H. Lavine Award twice and the Excellence in Scholarship Award.
Dr. Stewart has served on and been the leader of numerous departmental and university committees. He has taken leadership roles in numerous professional societies such as the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, International Shipmasters Association, Council of Supply Chain Management, Warehouse Education Research Council, American Society of Transportation and Logistics, Duluth-Superior Transportation Association, American Council of Master Mariners, Propeller Club of the United States, Institute of Supply Management, He is a member of Logistics of Disaster Response and Business Continuity, AT065T committees of the Transportation Research Board. He serves in leadership positions on public advisory boards, nonprofit boards of directors and companies. UW-Superior has awarded Dr. Stewart with the Distinguished Service Award and the Spirit of Superior Award.
Richard has had the good fortune to be married with Kathleen Collins for the past four decades and they have four wonderful young adults who are now making their small parts of the world better. Kathleen and Richard love to spend time in the wilderness, gardening, travelling, enjoying the company of friends and any other activities that result in fun and creative times.
