About
Kathryn has a B.A. in Geology, a M.Ed. in Science and Math for Teachers, and an ongoing passion for accessible lifelong learning experiences. She believes that educational programs must be relevant to the learner and grounded with the principle that there are multiple ways of making learning meaningful. Core to her teaching philosophy is that the process of learning is equally important as the product of the learning experience. Her areas of expertise include lifelong learning and K-12 STEM education.
Kathryn was born in South Range, Wisconsin, where she moved back to recently and considers her true home. Her current hobbies include enjoying the 80 acres of land surrounding the house her father built, her sweet dog, and getting out to lakes, streams, and forests. Equally important is spending quality time with her partner and family, as well as learning as much as possible about the changing social, political, and economic climate of Superior.
Research Interests
Kathryn’s professional career and research interests began at the College of Charleston in South Carolina through a grant-funded program from NASA. Primary work efforts focused on assuring NASA’s educational materials were accessible for students with special needs and grounded from a teacher and learner perspective. At the Science Museum of Minnesota, she focused on developing unique learning experiences, advocating for the professionalism of educators, and contributing to research around equitable teaching and learning. She continues to serve as the Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation-funded project focused on computational thinking. The project brings together two University partners and the museum with the express goal to empower and develop female youth and adults from traditionally underserved communities.
