Learn where the transformation of America began at the Crossroads of the North – at the corner of Hammond Avenue and Highway 61

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present “Crossroad of the North,” featuring the music of Bob Dylan, on Tuesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

The narrated concert featuring the music of Dylan and John Hammond’s artists explores the history of the City of Superior as an ancestral crossroad of the north.

When record producer Hammond signed Dylan to Columbia Records in 1961, neither of them knew the fate of their meeting had begun generations before them in the building of Superior. Hammond’s grandfather, Civil War hero General John Hammond, built the city from swamp land and Dylan’s ancestors found Superior as their shelter from pogrom in Lithuania.

Dan Singer, an alumnus of the UW-Superior Music Department shares his personal story and connection to this crossroad together with UW-Superior faculty, Alexander Sandor, pianist, and Erin Aldridge, violinist, in collaboration with “Danny Frank & the Smoky Gold.”

From the Delta Blues of Robert Johnson to Bessie Smith, Benny Goodman, Paul Robeson and Leonard Cohen, Dylan and Hammond joined forces to transform American popular culture through their combined music and activism a century after the Civil War.

Tickets are $10 and available at the door. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main at 1710 Weeks Ave in Superior.
