The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present a special chorale concert titled “Music of Terezin: Hope and Resistance” on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium.
“The concert is centered around music composed in the Terezin Concentration Camp during the Holocaust,” said Michael Fuchs, director of choral activities and UW-Superior Music Department Chair. “It is remarkable music – and challenging for us to understand and wrap our heads around. The subject matter is often very dark and discouraging, but also an incredible testament to hope and the human spirit.”
The performance will feature works by Pavel Haas and Gideon Klein, two composers who were interred in Terezin and later killed.
“Audience members can expect to hear music that challenges and enriches their lives,” said Fuchs. “There is immense power and beauty in this art, and our interactions with it make us better people and a better society.”
There will also be several pieces of music set to poetry written by children in Terezin.
“In addition to the UWS chorale, both Vicki Fingalson and I will be performing pieces for solo voice,” said Fuchs. “Fingalson, along with Greg Kehl Moore and Teresa Vaughan, will perform ‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly’ by Ellwood Derr, songs set to poems written by children in Terezin. Teresa Vaughan and I will perform ‘Four Songs to the Words of Chinese Poetry’ by Pavel Haas.”
Tickets are $5 for adults and free for students. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave.
