U.S. News & World Report names UW-Superior among best colleges

The University of Wisconsin-Superior has been named among the best colleges by U.S. News & World Report. UW-Superior received high marks among Regional Universities Midwest.

According to U.S. News, to be ranked, institutions had to meet the following conditions: have regional accreditation, be included in Carnegie’s Basic classification but not designated as a “highly specialized” school, enroll at least 100 undergraduate students, have reported financial expenditures data to the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) finance survey, and have reported a six-year graduation rate of full-time, first-year bachelor’s degree-seeking students in recent years.

The ranking emphasizes undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study.

U.S. News noted that economically disadvantaged students are less likely than others to finish college, even when controlling for other characteristics. UW-Superior’s ranking was among colleges U.S. News & World Report found are more successful than others at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants.

UW-Superior scored well with a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio and an average class size of less than 20 students.
