The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present its Global Percussion Concert on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium.
The concert will feature performances of Caribbean steel band music, Ghanaian drumming, Mexican-style marimba music and a collaboration with The College of St. Scholastica in the performance of a concerto in the style of Indian classical music.
The performance will also feature the Wisconsin premiere of a trio for marimba by UW-Superior alumnus, Ian Deterling, and “Material Rhythms,” by William Susman, which involves two movements – one for eight pieces of wood and one for four sets of bongos.
“We have been working via Zoom with Ghanaian drummer Frank Kobina Prah from Cape Coast, Ghana – a connection we made on our recent tour of Ghana,” said Brett Jones, professor of percussion and chair of the Music Department at UW-Superior.
The second half of the program will include a collaboration between the UW-Superior Chamber Orchestra and The College of St. Scholastica, featuring a violin and tuba concerto based on the musical traditions of India – “Concerto for Indian Violin and Tuba,” by Lakshminarayana Subramaniam.
Erin Aldridge, UW-Superior orchestra director and professor of violin and viola, and Derek Bromme, The College of St. Scholastica director of bands, will be featured soloists on violin and tuba, respectively, with Jones conducting.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for students. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main at 1710 Weeks Ave. in Superior.
